Three time Grammy Award winner and soul-stirring songstress Jill Scott will star as Precious Ramotswe in the forthcoming 13-episode series television version of the runaway bestseller, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency written by British author Alexander McCall Smith of Zimbabwe (native of Rhodesia).
This bestselling book tells the story of Precious Ramotswe, Motswana woman with a quick wit, sharp intellect, and keen powers of observation. She leads the only female-owned detective agency located in Gaborone, capital of Botswana. Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose plays Precious’s fussy, hilarious secretary, Grace Makutsi, while London actor, Lucian Msamati, is Ramotswe’s shy suitor.
“It was the happiest set I’ve ever worked on! It was the first film set where no one was on a diet! There were many women on the set and there was just something about Botswana that gave a relaxed, happy feel to the whole production” said Amy J. Moore, producer of the upcoming TV series.
The soul goddess was asked to take on the role after starring as lead heroine in the TV film for this book last year, directed by the late Anthony Minghella, which aired on the cable channel HBO. The 13-part series will be screened by HBO in the U.S. and Canada, while the BBC will distribute the show in the U.K.
After divorcing her husband of five years in 2007, Scott and her fiancee drummer, Lil John Roberts were engaged earlier this year, have matching tattoos of each other’s names on thier necks (see below!) and are recently rumored to be expecting. ALL my blessings, love and respect to Jill Scott with love, happiness and her endeavors. Get em girl!
