A child is the most sacred blessing that one could ever receive from God. The ultimate reflection of innocence and purity and the closet life-form comparable to Heavenly Angels. Every child deserves an opportunity to prosper regardless of the generational curses that may dwell amongst their families, nationalities or communities. However there are many heartless, selfish individuals who beg to differ. Every 40 seconds a child is reported missing in the United States and of these missing children approximately 45% are African Americans being torn away from their families by strangers and in some cases other family members. It is our sole duty to be actively involved in OUR youth’s lives not only by setting an example but also by providing an education, safety and the necessary tools for success to the best of our abilities. If the age old proverb, “it takes a village to raise a child” is correct then it must take an entire nation to save one. Our children deserve to have their communities fight for their safety just as well as any child whom we’ve witnessed grace our television screens on Nancy Grace or newspapers and magazines via Amber Alerts. This is the primary mission of Peas in Their Pods and the force which has drawn me to this blessed organization. Rilya Wilson was born in Miami, Florida September 29, 1996 into the arms of a homeless drug addicted mother. Rilya (which is an acronym for “Remember I Love You Always”) was taken into state custody when she was only 2 months old and transferred into the care of her Grandmother (one of the suspected biological fathers’ mother) Gloria Graham. Inevitably Rilya’s short lived three years allegedly consisted of physical abuse and neglect including but not limited to being tied to beds, locked in a dog cage, a laundry room and beyond for “bad behavior”. The alleged “last straw” was when Rilya wanted a Cleopatra costume (which her Grandmom considered “evil”) for Halloween instead of the Angel costume her Grandmother wanted her to wear. Geralyn Graham was charged with murdering Rilya when her cellmate Robin Lunceford claimed that she confessed by whispering “I killed it” and said she suffocated the 4-year-old because she “had demons,” In court papers, Lunceford claimed that Graham confessed to her and explained that she smothered Rilya with a pillow. When Rilya vanished in 1999 Graham blamed the system as the system blamed the Grandmother but neither of them reported Rilya missing for over 15 months. Graham continued to receive and cash checks for Rilya’s care and the case worker, Deborah Muskelly, continued to forge reports claiming she had visited the home and the child’s “needs were being met”. Tim Bottcher, a spokesman for the agency stated, ”We know we have folks who don’t think we do a good job, and that’s their opinion, but we are not necessarily going to respond every time someone says something.” Please click HERE for more information. This September 2008 Rilya would have been 12 years old and there is still no trace of her. In her memory, the Rilya Alert was created in 2008 by the staff of Peas in Their Pods as an awareness tool used to spread alerts and information for African American Missing children…

The following videos sing those unsung stories of children that have been abused, forgotten, lost or neglected. These are the videos and children which have torn deepest into my heart and soul and forced me to not only become a more careful parent myself but also urged me to speak out for our children whom have no voice. I warn you, these videos are vividly detailed and possibly graphic so proceed with caution but as amazing and surreal as they are… this is real life. Please wake up! If you hear or suspect any child abuse, please call authorities or 1-800-4-A-Child
